The Johnson Street Bridge affectionately called the Blue Bridge is a double-span Strauss Trunnion Bascule bridge that spans the entrance between Victoria’s inner harbour and the Songhees lands to the West and beyond. There are two separate, yet parallel, bridge spans – one to accommodate railway traffic and the second for vehicular traffic, bicycles, and pedestrians. The Johnson Street Bridge is one of what may be the three most familiar urban bridges of this type in Canada; the others are the Cherry Street Bridge in Toronto, built in 1931 and the La Salle Causeway Bridge, Kingston, built in 1917. Strauss also designed San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. The Johnston Street Bridge, deconstructed and sold for scrap, was replaced in 2018. Taylor was commissioned by the City of Victoria to create a digital photographic narrative of this structure.
