Vaults of Heaven  - Great Domes of Italy
(book proposal)
Domed Architecture has a  history of over twenty centuries. The significance of domed lie not only in their engineering achievement, but also in their metaphor. Domes reflect the curve of earth's hemisphere and create a metaphor for the Dome of Heaven. The oculus represents the eye of the divine, emitting light and air within. Domes such as the chapel of the Holy Shroud in Turin, (1668-94) designed by Guarino Guarini combine both the muscular architecture of the ancients, with the sense of the infinite weightlessness of late Gothic/early Renaissance structures. For John Taylor they represent "the spirit of man, soaring upwards to the Vault of Heaven."
